Possums can cause problems as scavengers and they may invade buildings. Possums are opportunistic and omnivorous scavengers. They may burrow under buildings; possums frequently enter attics, which is a bigger problem.
Possums in the Attic: Possums are great climbers. They have opposable thumbs and prehensile tails, and can easily climb up to roofs once on the roof they may enter through an open eave gap area. Many possums are nomadic, but females with young seem to establish a home range and a den site. An attic can be a protected place to rear young. Once established they are free to create a mess, destroying anything in the attic and defecating everywhere. Left unchecked they will create a very unpleasant odor.
Parasites and Diseases: Many times possums are infested with fleas and ticks. The fleas and ticks can infest pets and bite humans, and contribute to the spread of disease. Possums are not clean animals, and this unsanitary condition may cause health risks inside a building.
